Texas real estate exam: what to bring checklist

Print this the night before. Confirm your appointment, check both IDs, plan your route, and clear your pockets. The goal is simple: reach the first question without a preventable admission problem.

Bring this

  • Two forms of current signature identification in English (required for admission)
  • Primary ID: government-issued, photo-bearing, and signed (not expired)
  • Secondary ID: a second current ID that contains your signature
  • Names on both IDs match your Pearson VUE registration exactly
  • A permitted hand-held financial calculator, no letter keys (optional but recommended)
  • Your exam date, time, and test center location confirmed
  • Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your appointment

Acceptable IDs in English

Primary ID (government-issued, photo and signature, current):

  • Government-issued driver license
  • U.S. Department of State driver license
  • U.S. learner's permit (plastic card with photo and signature)
  • National, state, or country identification card
  • Passport or passport card
  • Military ID, including for spouses and dependents
  • Alien Registration Card (Green Card, Permanent Resident Visa)

Secondary ID (signature, current):

  • U.S. Social Security card
  • Debit (ATM) or credit card
  • Any ID from the primary list

Do NOT bring into the testing room

  • Cell phone, or a phone used as a calculator
  • Smartwatch, tablet, hand-held computer, pager, or other electronic device
  • A calculator with letter (alpha) keys, such as most graphing calculators
  • Bags, purse, wallet, coats, or hats
  • Books, notes, study sheets, or your own scratch paper
  • Pens or pencils (the center provides note-taking material)
  • Outside food or drink at the workstation
  • Firearms or other weapons
  • Any ID whose name does not match your registration

What happens at check-in

  • Report 30 minutes early and check in with the test center administrator
  • Present both IDs for review; you are photographed and give a digital signature
  • Review and sign the Candidate Rules Agreement
  • Take the short computer tutorial (its time does not count against your exam time)
  • Store all personal items in a secure area or return them to your vehicle
  • Empty your pockets and follow any sleeve, ear, and self-pat-down instructions

During the exam

  • Use the untimed tutorial to learn the testing controls before the exam clock starts
  • Use only the note-taking material supplied by the test center
  • Raise your hand and wait for the administrator before taking a permitted unscheduled break
  • Remember that an unscheduled break does not stop the exam clock
  • Keep phones, notes, study guides, and other prohibited items stored during a break
  • Return every piece of supplied note-taking material before leaving
National portion85 items

80 scored plus 5 unscored pretest items, with 150 minutes.

Texas portion50 items

40 scored plus 10 unscored pretest items, with 90 minutes.

When the exam ends

  • Keep the pass or fail score report Pearson provides after the exam
  • If you fail a portion, record its raw score and the diagnostic category information
  • Do not perform brokerage services until TREC has issued the license and it is active under a sponsoring broker
  • If you need a retake, confirm eligibility and the current fee before booking

If something changes

Use the official contact and appointment instructions. These are planning steps, not promises that a late or noncompliant candidate will be admitted.

The name on an ID does not match the registration

Contact Pearson VUE before exam day. Do not rely on the test center to override the admission rule.

An ID is expired, damaged, unsigned, or not in English

Replace it with an eligible current ID before traveling. Bring two current signature IDs that satisfy the published rules.

You are unsure whether the calculator is permitted

Check the current handbook before the appointment and bring a simple handheld financial calculator with no alpha keys.

Traffic or another delay threatens your arrival

Call the test center or Pearson VUE immediately and follow the current appointment instructions. Admission is not guaranteed after a late arrival.

You need medication or an accommodation

Follow Pearson VUE's accommodations process before exam day. Do not assume ordinary storage or break rules will cover a testing accommodation.
