    Plat

A recorded map of a subdivision showing the lots, blocks, streets, and easements, referenced by the lot and block description method.

A plat is a map of a subdivision recorded in the public records. It shows the individual lots, blocks, streets, common areas, and easements, and it sets the dimensions of each lot.

Once recorded, the plat lets parcels be described simply by their lot and block numbers rather than by a long metes and bounds description.

    On the exam

A recorded plat is what makes the lot and block description method possible.

    Exam trap

The plat must be recorded for a lot and block description to be valid. An unrecorded sketch is not enough.
