Texas Real Estate License Fingerprinting and IdentoGO

Fingerprinting is a required background-check step, but the appointment itself does not decide whether an applicant qualifies for a license. IdentoGO collects the fingerprints and sends them through the Texas Department of Public Safety to the FBI. TREC reviews the licensing record and makes the licensing decision.

That division of roles explains why IdentoGO cannot answer questions about what appears on a record, how TREC will evaluate it, or when a license will be issued.

When should a Texas real estate applicant get fingerprinted?

Use the timing tied to your own REALM record.

TREC's current sales agent and REALM guidance says:

1. Submit the complete application with all required course certificates.
2. Wait while the status is Submitted.
3. When staff opens the file, the status becomes In Review.
4. TREC sends the fingerprint instruction letter during In Review.
5. Follow the enrollment method provided in that message or shown in the Fingerprint Enrollment area of REALM.

TREC specifically tells applicants not to contact the agency asking for the fingerprint letter while an application still shows Submitted.

This current workflow is important because the January 2026 Pearson VUE candidate handbook still tells candidates to use a TREC ID from an exam eligibility letter when scheduling fingerprints. TREC's live REALM instructions place the fingerprint email earlier, during In Review. Follow the current TREC email and your REALM record, not a legacy sequence copied from an older checklist.

How the TREC and IdentoGO fingerprint process works

Step 1: submit the TREC application

Fingerprint authorization is connected to a license application. Complete the TREC Sales Agent Application in REALM first.

Make sure the name in the application is accurate. A mismatch between the application, enrollment record, and identification can create a preventable detour.

Step 2: wait for In Review and the instruction email

Watch the application under Home and My Records. Also check the inbox and spam folder for the email attached to your REALM account.

TREC uses no-reply@notices.trec.texas.gov for portal notices. Add it to your allowed senders.

Step 3: use the TREC-specific enrollment path

Open the link or Fingerprint Enrollment tool supplied by TREC. Use the service details attached to your application. A generic IdentoGO appointment may not carry the Texas DPS and FBI coding TREC needs.

Do not use a service code from a blog post, old screenshot, friend, or unrelated profession. The TREC message is the safer source because enrollment instructions can change.

Step 4: choose an authorized location and appointment

Select an available authorized IdentoGO location through the TREC-specific path. The Pearson handbook says appointments are required and same-day walk-in service is not available. It encourages candidates to schedule at least 24 hours ahead.

Location inventory and appointment times change. Search through the live enrollment flow rather than relying on a static list.

Step 5: bring the required identification and instructions

Use the exact identification list shown during enrollment and in the TREC message. Do not assume that the two-ID rules for the Pearson VUE exam are identical to the fingerprint appointment rules.

The Pearson handbook also tells candidates to bring their TREC documentation to the appointment. Because TREC's current REALM process may provide that documentation before exam eligibility, use the letter or enrollment record actually sent for your application.

Step 6: complete the fingerprints and photograph

At the appointment, IdentoGO captures the fingerprints and a photograph. The data is transmitted electronically through DPS and the FBI process.

You normally do not leave with a printed fingerprint card after an electronic Texas appointment. The current handbook says the prints are sent electronically.

Step 7: keep the receipt and monitor REALM

Keep the IdentoGO receipt. It gives you a record of the appointment if follow-up is needed.

Do not routinely email the receipt to TREC. The REALM FAQ says TREC receives fingerprint information from the external system and applicants should not email proof unless asked.

How much does TREC fingerprinting cost?

TREC's fee schedule effective December 15, 2025, lists a $37 payment to IDEMIA for an applicant who has not previously been fingerprinted for TREC.

That amount is separate from:

• The $206 original online sales agent application total.
• The $43 Pearson VUE sales examination fee per appointment.
• Any education-provider tuition.

Check the live fee schedule before paying because vendor and state fees can change.

Do old fingerprints count for TREC?

Fingerprints taken for another employer, state agency, professional license, or volunteer role do not satisfy the TREC requirement. TREC says the submission must be in FBI format and completed through an authorized Texas DPS process for TREC.

The current fee schedule distinguishes applicants who have previously been fingerprinted for TREC. If that applies to you, do not schedule and pay again based on guesswork. Follow the instruction shown in REALM or contact TREC about your specific record.

The practical rule is simple:

What if the fingerprints are unreadable?

Poor ridge detail, dry skin, scars, or capture quality can make a submission unreadable. TREC says IDEMIA will contact you to arrange another set if the first submission cannot be read.

The reprint has two important rules:

• There is no additional fee for the IDEMIA-requested reprint.
• You cannot schedule that reprint online.

If the second set is also unreadable, TREC staff initiates a manual FBI name search. TREC warns that this adds time to the process.

Do not book a new paid appointment on your own to solve an unreadable result. Wait for the instruction attached to the failed capture.

Can you complete TREC fingerprints outside Texas?

Yes, but the process depends on access to an approved service.

TREC says an applicant outside the IdentoGO service area can request a hard card. It must be the TREC-specific hard card because the Texas DPS and FBI coding matters. A blank card obtained elsewhere is not an automatic substitute.

For an out-of-state applicant:

1. Read TREC's current out-of-state fingerprint FAQ.
2. Request the TREC-specific hard card through the stated process.
3. Follow the enclosed capture and mailing instructions exactly.
4. Keep copies of the tracking and submission details you are allowed to retain.
5. Expect a mailed hard-card workflow to take longer than electronic capture.

The Pearson handbook says candidates outside Texas should use TREC's hard-card instructions. It does not mean every out-of-state fingerprint service can submit electronically into the Texas TREC channel.

Fingerprints, background history, and application review are different

An IdentoGO appointment is a collection event. It does not clear a background issue and it does not produce a licensing decision at the counter.

If you are concerned about criminal history or another fitness issue, read TREC's Fitness Determination guidance. The question is not whether an IdentoGO employee thinks the record is acceptable. TREC applies its licensing statutes, rules, and standards to the application.

Be complete and accurate in the application. Fingerprints are one source TREC uses in the background review, not a replacement for required disclosures.

How to avoid the most common fingerprint detours

Do not schedule from a generic search result

Start from the TREC message or REALM Fingerprint Enrollment tool so the submission is tied to the right agency and purpose.

Do not request the letter too early

Submitted means TREC has received the application. In Review means staff has opened it. TREC ties fingerprint instructions to In Review.

Do not assume another set of fingerprints transfers

Background checks are purpose-specific. TREC explicitly rejects fingerprints taken for another reason.

Do not email proof unless asked

Keep the receipt, but allow the external reporting connection to update TREC. Upload or email it only if TREC requests that action.

Do not pay for your own unreadable-print retake

IDEMIA coordinates the no-cost reprint. An applicant cannot schedule that reprint online.

Do not use a generic hard card

Out-of-state applicants need the TREC-specific card and instructions.

• Submit a complete TREC application in REALM.
• Confirm the application email and legal name.
• Wait for the status to move from Submitted to In Review.
• Open the TREC fingerprint instruction email.
• Use the REALM enrollment tool or TREC-specific link.
